Research projects

On&Off: Atmospheres of Dis/connection

Since March 2023, Ana has been a part of the On&Off team. This exploratory study seeks to expand the scholarship in the nascent field of digital disconnection in the Portuguese context, focusing on four micro-environments: pilgrimage, mourning, everyday parenting, and activism. The On&Off Project is funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology under Grant Agreement no. 2022.01282.PTDC. https://doi.org/10.54499/2022.01282.PTDC

Youth Skills (ySKILLS)

From February 2022 until December 2023, Ana collaborated with the ySKILLS team in Portugal. This European Project proposes a holistic, child-centric approach to understanding how use of the internet has variable consequences for children’s rights to participation, information, freedom of expression, education, and play, and to protection from harm. The ySKILLS project received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research & Innovation program under Grant Agreement no. 870612.

CriA.On

Ana is a part of the Children and Adolescents Online (CriA.On) platform, a space for Portuguese-speaking researchers to share resources and knowledge about children’s and adolescents’ digital skills, cultures and rights with families and educators. https://criaon.fcsh.unl.pt

Education

PhD in Communication Sciences

September 2022 – May 2027 at NOVA University of Lisbon

Ana is a PhD-candidate in Communication Sciences with a specialty in Contemporary Culture and New Technologies at the Interdisciplinary Centre of Social Sciences (CICS.NOVA) and at the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal. Her ongoing PhD project “Digital well-being according to youth: perspectives, strategies, and recommendations” is funded by an individual grant awarded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), Grant Agreement no. PRT/BD/154767/2023. She is supervised by Professor Susana Batista and Professor Lídia Marôpo.

Masters in Education Studies

September 2021 – December 2023 at NOVA University of Lisbon

Her thesis entitled “Who cares about big data? A manual for youth digital literacy” was dedicated to the development of an educational manual for youth’s big data literacy. She was supervised by Professor Susana Batista and Professor Lídia Marôpo. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/168266

Undergraduate in Communication Sciences

September 2018 – June 2021 at NOVA University of Lisbon

During her undergraduate degree, Ana spent a semester with an Erasmus+ Grant at University Complutense of Madrid (contract no. 29191(320)645/2019/SMS).
