Ana Kubrusly is a PhD-candidate in Communication Sciences at NOVA University of Lisbon funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

Her research focuses on children’s and adolescents’ relationships with digital environments, namely in terms of their literacy, skills, well-being, and digital cultures.

In 2021, Ana completed her undergraduate degree in Communication Sciences at NOVA University of Lisbon, where she grew interested in the topic of media literacies. In order to deepen her knowledge regarding this subject, she applied for a Masters in Education Studies in the same university, where she developed a thesis focused on adolescents’ digital literacies, emphasizing the societal and cultural impacts of big data and the generalized datafication of everyday life.

In September 2022, she started her PhD in Communication Sciences — with a specialty in Contemporary Culture and New Technologies — at NOVA University in Lisbon. Here, Ana decided to pursue another important topic regarding young people’s digital life: digital well-being.

Her dissertation project, entitled “Digital well-being according to youth: perspectives, strategies, and recommendations”, aims to adopt a child-centric perspective on digital well-being, employing mixed methods to better understand how Portuguese children conceptualize, manage, and imagine their own digital well-being. With this project, Ana plans to co-construct an agenda for children’s digital well-being with the participants in her study.

Her PhD is funded by an FCT individual grant (no. PRT/BD/154767/2023) hosted at the Interdisciplinary Centre of Social Sciences (CICS.NOVA) and at the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal. She is supervised by Professor Susana Batista and Professor Lídia Marôpo.

Currently, Ana also collaborates with the On&Off: Atmospheres of Dis/Connection project, which focuses on digital dis/connection practices in the Portuguese context. She is a writer in the CriA.On platform, aimed at sharing scientific information about children’s and adolescents’ digital cultures, skills, and rights. She occasionally gives lectures in undergraduate level courses such as Children Youth and Media or Media Education and Information Management at the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal.
